WHEREAS data shows that those living within a 10-mile radius of airports are predisposed to several health problems like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, hearing impairment, heart problems, sleep disturbance, irritation and the environment around us is one of the biggest indicators of our health; and
WHEREAS the Whiteman Airport has been a persistent environmental justice issue in the community, and gravely impacts the residents of Pacoima and the surrounding communities with issues such as, but not limited to, noise concerns, light pollution, and air pollution, and these impacts present an even greater health threat when examining the proximity of neighborhoods to Whiteman Airport; and everyone deserves to live in a clean, healthy, safe environment; and
WHEREAS since 2009, there have been 15 crashes related to the Whiteman Airport cited by the National Transportation Safety Board;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of San Fernando Valley calls for the closure of the private portion of Whiteman Airport.
