Resolution Opposing Glendale Rent Mediation
WHEREAS increasing rents and stagnant area median income have created a growing
affordability gap for rental housing in Southern California;
and
WHEREAS rent mediation ordinances
are ineffective at protecting renters because legally
non-binding mediation requires only voluntary compliance and
offers renters no legal protections from unsustainable and unreasonable rent
hikes and continues to only benefit landlords; and
WHEREAS the California State
Democratic Party Platform endorses statewide Rent Control and works to
strengthen renters rights,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the
Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley opposes the proposed “Right to Lease”
rent mediation ordinance in Glendale and encourages city and state lawmakers to
propose meaningful short- and long-term solutions to the housing affordability
crisis that prioritize immediate renter protections and community stability,
and
THEREFORE BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that
a copy of this resolution be sent to
California Governor Gavin Newsom, Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis;
