Passed by DPSFV Executive Board April 1, 2019
WHEREAS, man-made climate change is a true national emergency and the greatest problem facing future generations, that the State of California has taken numerous steps to combat climate change despite no assistance from the federal government; and
WHEREAS, combating climate change is a plank of the platforms of the California Democratic Party and Democratic National Committee in recognition of the massive destruction climate change can wreak on our area, state, and entire nation, evidenced most recently by the Thomas and Woolsey Fires in 2017 and 2018; and
WHEREAS, the Green New Deal (calling for net zero greenhouse gas emissions within a very short time frame; creation of millions of good jobs; investment in the infrastructure and industry of the United States; securing clean air and water, climate and community resilience, healthy food, and access to nature for all; and promoting justice and equity with respect to frontline communities, all while ensuring a just transition for workers in the fossil fuel and related industries) will take the necessary steps to eliminate our carbon dependency, reduce pollution, create good-paying middle class jobs, and take meaningful steps to reduce the impacts of climate change on the working-class, the middle-class, and the environment;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Simi Valley Democratic Club strongly urges its Congressional Representatives and Senators to support the Green New Deal and make it the primary legislative focus of the 116th Congress; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution shall be sent to the Senators and U.S. Representatives of the San Fernando Valley urging them to support the Green New Deal.
